Current Community Outreach Projects
Here are the community outreach projects that we are working in 2018.
Morton Plant Hospital:
- Burp Cloths – Drape this cloth over your shoulder while burping baby. Click here for instructions on how to make burp cloths. Use cotton, flannel, fleece or terry cloth.
- Tummy Time Quilts – Donate a small quilt (30 to 36 inch square) to be used for baby’s tummy time. There are more boys in the NICU so boy colors would be appreciated. Look through your orphan blocks and add a few borders and it will be up to 30 inches quickly.
- Teddy Bears – These are for the children who go through the ER. See Gayle P for the pattern.
- Knitted and Crocheted Items – They always need newborn size (not premie sized) baby hats, chemo hats, soft scarves (6″ X 60″) and lap quilts for the chemo treatment rooms.
Mease Countryside Hospital
Hearts for Infants – This is a very easy, quick project. These hearts are given to mothers whose newborn infants have been admitted to the NICU. The fabric heart is worn against the mother’s skin so that the fabric might absorb the scent of the mother. The heart is placed with the baby in the isolette so that the mother is always with her child. Click here for instructions on how to make hearts.
Heaven on Earth for Veterans
We will need 30 placemats for the residents of the homes to give it that special homey feeling. They are always in need of donations of cleaning supplies, laundry detergent, garbage bags, etc.
Pace Senior Center
The ladies there love to sew! If you are cleaning out your supplies and have good quality supplies to donate then I will take them to the ladies. They like to sew walker bags, aprons, and other community projects. They could use sewing machine needles and thread also. They would get the most use out of bigger cuts of fabric rather than quilting scraps. They also do art there so any coloring books, crayons, colored pencils, etc would be enjoyed.
Clothes to Kids
This organization collects good quality used clothes that is appropriate for school. They can always use school uniforms. Also shoes, belts, purses, costume jewelry, and backpacks are in demand. Later in the year we will be doing a drive to collect new (in package) socks and underwear. The kids range in age from 4 to 18 , so if you see a clearance super sale and can pick up something for them, we will be collecting for a late summer donation.
You can help by donating anything made of fabric – towels, blankets, bedspreads, sheets, pillows, fabric. You could also donate thread of any kind or color, and machine needles – universal and heavy-duty.
Right now, sewers are desperately needed. Please contact Pamela Hosceit for dates, times and locations if you are interested.
For more information or questions on any of these projects, please contact Gale Pittman or Pamela Hoscheit.
